HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH

2020: “Hispanic Americans: A History of Serving Our Nation.”

Hispanic Heritage Month began as a week in mid-September under the administration of President Lyndon Johnson in 1968, and was expanded by law to a full month, September 15 to October 15, in 1988 under President Ronald Reagan.

During this 30 day period diverse Hispanic cultures are celebrated across the country.

The date September 15 and the week that follows it is significant because it marks the anniversaries of independence for 7 Latin American countries: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua on September 15, Mexico on the 16th and Chile on the 18th. Additionally October 12, el Día de la Raza (Columbus Day), falls within this month.
